A clearer way forward
Ecommerce projects rarely fail because the store looked wrong. They fail because of what happens on either side of the checkout button.
Stock says four, the shelf says zero, and now you're emailing a customer to apologise. Online orders arrive in one system and in-person sales in another, and the reconciliation is somebody's Sunday. A product gets added in the point-of-sale and has to be added again on the website, so eventually it doesn't get added on the website. The store isn't broken — it's just disconnected from the business it's supposed to represent.
So the interesting part of an ecommerce build is almost never the design. It's deciding what the source of truth is for inventory, and making everything else follow it. If you already run Square, that's usually Square. The website reads from it rather than keeping its own parallel list that somebody has to maintain.
That decision drives the rest: how products sync, what happens when stock runs out mid-checkout, whether a price change in one place shows up in the other, what an order actually triggers. Get it right and the store quietly runs itself. Get it wrong and you've added a second job.
We build custom rather than on a hosted platform when the integration matters more than the templates — when there's an existing inventory system that has to stay authoritative, or a catalogue that's too particular for a standard product model. For a straightforward catalogue with no integration requirements, a hosted platform is often the honest answer, and we'll tell you that.
Work that proves the point

Manitoba TCG eCommerce Website
A custom storefront integrated directly with SquareUp's inventory system, so products and availability come from the system the shop already runs on — expanding sales reach without adding manual work.

AutoTCG
A scanner-to-storefront pipeline that identifies, prices and publishes trading card inventory, with Square catalogue sync and an operator review queue for anything ambiguous — running at 99% accuracy without manual import.

How the work moves
Map the systems
What holds inventory today, what holds payment, what holds customer records. We work out what should be authoritative before designing anything that depends on it.
Define the sync
How products, prices and stock move between systems, how often, and what happens when they disagree. This is the part that determines whether the store is an asset or a chore.
Build the storefront
Product browsing, search, cart and checkout built around your actual catalogue rather than a generic product model.
Test with real orders
Real products, real payment, real edge cases — out-of-stock mid-checkout, partial availability, refunds.
Launch and monitor
Go live, then watch the first weeks of real orders closely and fix what only shows up under real use.
Who this is for
A good fit for small and mid-sized retailers who already sell somewhere — a shop floor, a Square terminal, a wholesale channel — and want the online side to be part of the same business rather than a separate one.
Especially if:
- You run Square or a similar system and need the website to respect it
- Your catalogue is unusual enough that standard product templates fight you
- Stock accuracy actually matters because items are one-of-a-kind or limited
- Somebody is currently keeping two systems in sync by hand
Who this is not for
Probably not the right fit if:
- You have a simple catalogue and no integration needs. Shopify will cost you less and do the job.
- You haven't sold the product anywhere yet. Validate demand before paying for a custom build.
- You need same-week turnaround. Integration work has a floor, and rushing it is how stock accuracy problems get built in.
- You're looking for someone to also run fulfilment, customer service or merchandising. We build the system; you run the shop.
Questions before we start
Start with the inventory question
Tell us what system holds your stock today and how orders currently reach you. That conversation usually makes clear within twenty minutes whether you need a custom build or whether a hosted platform would serve you better.
